Stephen Hawking

Born in North London, Stephen Hawking attended St Albans School and later studied at Oxford University, where he graduated with a first-class honors degree in Natural Sciences. He pursued cosmology at Cambridge University, working under noted scientists such as Dennis Sciama. Hawking became the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge in 1979, a position once held by Sir Isaac Newton.

Hawking made significant contributions to understanding the universe, particularly through his work on black holes and the Big Bang, combining Einstein's General Theory of Relativity with quantum mechanics. He demonstrated that black holes emit radiation, now known as Hawking radiation, and that the universe has a finite beginning and end.

At age 21, Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a motor neuron disease that gradually paralyzed him. Despite this, he continued his scientific work using a computerized speech-generating device after losing his voice. He could communicate by selecting words on a computer screen, enabling him to produce approximately 10 words per minute.

Hawking wrote several popular science books, including A Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nutshell, which have been translated into over 40 languages and helped to make complex scientific concepts accessible to the public. His work and writings have inspired many, including children, by expanding imaginations about the cosmos.

Hawking received numerous awards and honors, including the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1982. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

John Dee (July 13, 1527 - December 1608 or March 1609) was an English mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, occultist, imperialist, and writer. He served as an advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, focusing on subjects such as alchemy, divination, and Hermetic philosophy. Dee sought to distinguish the worlds of science and magic. In his early twenties, he was invited to the University of Paris to teach advanced algebra courses.

Though he began with mathematics, Dee became well-known in England as an astronomer who applied geographical discoveries during his voyages. Alongside his scientific work, he studied magic, astrology, and Hermetic philosophy. The last thirty years of his life were dedicated to communicating with spiritual beings in pursuit of universal knowledge about creation and the apocalypse.

Dee also researched Hermetic magic, combining his mathematical work with Renaissance Platonism, influenced by Marsilio Ficino. He investigated divination and the concept of a divine world underlying the physical one. Throughout his life, he collected a large library, the biggest in England at the time.

His scholarly pursuits affected his political career as well. He was a teacher and sometimes advisor to Queen Elizabeth I and was involved with figures like Francis Walsingham and William Cecil. Dee was also the first writer to use the term "British Empire."

John Napier, also known as Neper, Baron of Merchiston, was born in Edinburgh in 1550 and died on April 4, 1617, at Merchiston Castle. He was a Scottish mathematician famous for discovering logarithms. Napier studied at the University of Saint Andrews and was largely an amateur mathematician.

He sought a way to simplify numerical calculations, leading him to invent a method using rods, now known as Napier's bones, which helped with multiplication and division. He demonstrated the relationship between arithmetic sequences (1, 2, 3, ...) and geometric sequences (10, 100, 1000, ...) in his work. In 1614, he published a book titled "Description of the Logarithm Rules," where he introduced the concept of logarithms by comparing arithmetic and geometric sequences.

Unlike the sequences themselves, logarithms today are understood as functions related to numbers. Oxford mathematician Henry Briggs worked with Napier to develop more practical logarithmic tables and scales. Between 1618 and 1624, Napier released two improved logarithmic scales based on his twenty years of research. He published two foundational books in 1617 that influenced the development of calculators and computational methods.
